So you’ve got this awesome new Squarespace website up and running and you are ready to kick some serious blogging butt… But where do you begin?

If you find yourself staring at a blank page and scratching your head with writer’s block, fear not. There are a few tricks you can use to get started on keeping an effective blog on your Squarespace website. Here are five:

1. Give your audience something they can use! Everyone needs useful information about topics that interest them—so give your audience ideas and info that they can really use. For example, if you’re a wedding photographer in San Francisco, offer some tips on choosing a location for your engagement photo session or a seasonal guide to the most photo-friendly spots in your area. Think about what your target market needs to know in relation to your business.

2. Make a schedule and stick with it. There is nothing worse than clicking on a blog only to find that the owner hasn’t posted in six months. Who wants to read old news? In an ideal world, you should be posting at least once a week—which is great for SEO—but if you can commit to only twice a month, do that and stick to the plan.

3. Keywords, keywords, keywords. Remember: Your blog is one of the easiest ways to populate your website with keyword-rich content, so be sure to infuse each of your Squarespace blog posts with your key search terms.

4. Draw in your readers. A great photo or video can do wonders for engaging a reader with your content. Most people don’t have time to read a lot these days, so lure them with a gorgeous photo or an intriguing video. And remember to share your posts on social media—which is easy to set up in the back end of Squarespace.

5. Consider your title carefully. The title is one of the most important aspects of a blog post—not only for drawing attention, but also for SEO! Remember to use your keywords in your blog posts. That wedding photographer we mentioned before could title her blog: “Scenic Locations”. But that would stink. Instead, she should call it “Scenic Wedding Photography Locations in San Francisco.”
