What is a managed website, and is it worth it?
A managed website is a site that one team designs, hosts, secures and keeps updated for you, usually for a monthly fee. It is worth it when your time is better spent running your business than maintaining software, and when you want one accountable partner instead of several vendors.
What is included
A managed website typically covers the build, hosting, SSL, backups, security monitoring, software and plugin updates, accessibility work and a set amount of content changes each month. When something breaks or you need a new page, you send a request and the team handles it.
How it differs from doing it yourself
With a do-it-yourself builder, you get the tools and you do the work. That can suit a very small or very new business. As a business grows, the hidden cost shows up as time: chasing updates, fixing layout problems, keeping up with accessibility rules and figuring out why a form stopped sending.
How it differs from a one-time build
A traditional agency builds a site, hands it over and moves on. Six months later the content is stale and no one owns the site. A managed website keeps the same team responsible after launch, so the site stays current and keeps working.
Who it fits
Managed websites fit owners who want a professional site without becoming a webmaster: home builders, law firms, medical and therapy practices, nonprofits, restaurants and service businesses. It fits less well if you have an in-house developer or want to edit every detail yourself every day.
What to ask before you sign
- What exactly is included each month, and what costs extra?
- Who owns the domain and the content?
- How fast are requests handled?
- What happens if I leave?
- Is accessibility (ADA) work included?
Clear answers to these questions tell you more than any portfolio.
How much does a managed website cost?
It depends on scope. At Fix8, website packages start at $3,999 for the Starter and $4,999 for The Full Monty, and hosting starts at $99 a month per site with ADA compliance included.
Can I still edit my own website?
Yes. You can make your own edits, or send requests and let the team handle them. Most clients do a mix of both.
Do I own my website?
You should own your domain and your content. Ask any provider to put that in writing before you start.
